Corning Watch: LCD shipments jump, record year possible

One third-quarter surge in global shipments of lcd tv televisions should help Corning Inc. to a strong financial finish this coming year.

After several quarters of weakness, LCD shipments registered a 9 percent rise in another quarter, according to IHS/Display Search.

North America would have been a particular spot, with third-quarter shipments up 12 percent through the same period a year ago.

Live view screen glass is Corning Inc.'s flagship product. Corning's sales of display glass products jumped 62 percent within the third quarter on the same period this past year. Earnings with the segment were up 14 percent.

Shipments of LCD televisions from China rose 9 percent in the third quarter, IHS/Display Search said.

The LCD market in India, where currency valuations make the flat-screen TVs accessible to more consumers, seemed to be strong inside third quarter.

"As you move the last a long period in the TV business are difficult when it comes to overall shipments and revenue, the market industry is showing some broad resiliency now, with most regions enjoying increase in the 3rd quarter," said Paul Gagnon, director of global TV research at DisplaySearch.

Gagnon said many people are replacing their primary televisions in key regions, while larger screens and better-resolution displays are encouraging buyers to upgrade. That's good news to the Twin Tiers' largest employer, which utilizes Lcd television glass for almost all of the profits.

Fourth-quarter sales of LCD televisions are traditionally strong in United states due to Christmas holiday. An effective fourth quarter would help propel Corning Inc. to the $10 billion sales record it truly is targeting in 2010.

The resurgence in LCD television shipments will also help Corning Inc. offset lower-than-expected sales of Gorilla Glass. Corning overestimated the interest on the protective covering glass the tablet computer market in 2010.

The Fortune 500 company unveiled the fourth generation of Gorilla Glass Nov. 21 and is also based on the stronger, lighter product to reinvigorate sales in 2015.

Hopefully happens and Tv sales remain strong, that will provide you with the Fortune 500 company using a broad basis for significant growth next season.
